Thinking About a Heat Pump? Here’s What You Need to Know Before Making the Switch
September 30, 2026
Heat pumps have become an increasingly important part of the conversation around home heating, energy efficiency and more sustainable homes. But if you’re considering one for your own home, you probably have plenty of questions. Is my home suitable? Do I need underfloor heating? What happens to my existing radiators? And what should I consider before choosing a system?
At the PTSB Ideal Home Show, the Mitsubishi Electric team will be on hand to help homeowners cut through the confusion and understand what really matters. Here are some of the key things to think about.
1. Start with your home, not the heat pump
Every home is different. Before choosing a heat pump, it’s important to understand your property and its heating requirements.
Factors such as the age and size of the property, levels of insulation, existing heating system and how you use your home can all influence the right solution.
Rather than starting with a particular product, begin by getting good advice about what your home actually needs.

2. Don’t assume you need to change everything
One of the common concerns we hear from homeowners is whether installing a heat pump means completely changing their existing heating system, radiators or dramatically renovating their home.
The answer will depend on your individual property. That’s exactly why getting expert advice early is so important. A professional assessment can help you understand what changes, if any, may be needed and ensure your system is designed correctly from the outset.

3. Think about comfort as well as efficiency
Heating your home isn’t just about the numbers on your energy bill. It’s about creating a comfortable living environment for you and your family.
A well-designed heat pump system should take into account how you live in your home and the level of comfort you want throughout the year. And while heating is important, it’s only part of the picture.
4. Don’t forget about ventilation
As we make our homes more energy efficient and airtight, ventilation becomes increasingly important too. Good ventilation helps create a healthier, more comfortable indoor environment, so it should be considered alongside heating when planning improvements to your home.
Visitors to the show on Saturday can hear more about this directly from architect and TV presenter Dermot Bannon, who will be giving a dedicated talk with Mitsubishi Electric on ventilation.

5. Bring your heat pump questions to the show
Sometimes the easiest way to understand your options is simply to talk to someone.
Mitsubishi Electric will be hosting six talks on heat pumps over the course of the weekend at the Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan Home Advice theatre. Dermot Bannon will also join the Mitsubishi Electric team on Saturday the 17th for two live heat pump Q&A sessions, giving visitors the opportunity to hear practical discussions around some of the biggest questions homeowners have when considering a heat pump.
Whether you’re building a new home, renovating an existing property or simply exploring your options for the future, it’s a great opportunity to learn more before making any decisions.
