To give you a flavour of what you can expect, here are eight common pitfalls you can avoid, plus some great tips on how you can get it right.
Top 8 Mistakes Homeowners make with Heating and Ventilation
(and how to avoid them)
1. Choosing the Wrong Heat Pump
Not every heat pump suits every home. The right choice depends on property size, insulation, and heating demand. Mitsubishi Electric’s Ecodan R290 range, delivers high efficiency by using a future-ready refrigerant with an ultra-low global warming potential – making it one of the most sustainable options on the market. The Ecodan R290 also delivers flow temperatures up to 75°C, so it’s compatible with most existing radiator systems and ideal for retrofit projects.
✅ Top Tip: Always get a professional heat loss calculation before choosing a system. A trusted installer will ensure the right model is matched to your property’s needs.
2. Assuming Bigger Is Better
Oversized systems cost more to run and wear out faster. A correctly sized heat pump will quietly and efficiently keep your home at the perfect temperature.
✅ Pro Tip: If you’re replacing a boiler, don’t assume your heat pump needs to match it in kilowatts. Heat pumps operate differently, so rely on an expert sizing — not guesswork. In many cases it’s better to have a smaller unit running more frequently, than a bigger oversized unit running intermittently.
3. Skipping the Insulation Check
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes, so taking a fabric first approach is necessary. Upgrading lofts, walls, and windows first means lower running costs and better comfort.
✅ Pro Tip: Start with loft and draught-proofing — they often deliver the biggest performance boost for the lowest cost.
4. Overlooking Ventilation
Modern airtight homes need ventilation to stay healthy. Mitsubishi Electric’s Lossnay Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system supplies fresh, filtered air while recovering heat from outgoing stale air — so can you enjoy cleaner air without wasting energy.
The Lossnay MVHR system also works in perfect harmony with your Ecodan heat pump to deliver year-round comfort.

New solution alert! You can now further enhance your home’s protection against overheating with the CP-500CM- L/R cooling module. This module pairs perfectly with the VL- 500CZPVU-L/R-E residential Lossnay MVHR and delivers tempered fresh air to help prevent overheating, meaning you can have cooled, filtered fresh air supplied throughout your home without the need for complicated add-on systems.
✅ Pro Tip: MVHR systems can filter out pollen and fine dust, making them a great option for people with asthma or allergies.
5. Ignoring Regular Maintenance
An annual service keeps systems efficient and is essential to maintain your Ecodan heating systems warranty. Mitsubishi Electric offers service and maintenance packages both directly and through its network of approved installers nationwide.
✅ Pro Tip: Set a calendar reminder for your annual service or book a maintenance plan that includes reminders and discounts. All Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan heat pump systems installed in Ireland and registered directly with Mitsubishi Electric Ireland receive annual reminders, and if serviced annually, can receive up to 7-year warranty (Ts&Cs apply).
6. Poor Placement of Units
Outdoor units need space and airflow. A good installer will choose a location that minimises noise and maximises performance.
✅ Pro Tip: Avoid placing outdoor units near tight corners or enclosed areas — these can restrict airflow and reduce efficiency. Depending on the unit, you need to leave between 100-300mm clearance at the sides and back, and between 500mm-1000mm at the front to ensure your heat pump can “breathe” properly.
Home Design Tip from Dermot Bannon: Dermot advises how a well-placed plant can hide a heat pumps outdoor unit. “A lot of people get worried about heat pumps that you’re going to be looking at it in your garden, but if you know where it’s going and you plan it out then one plant cleverly placed means that whenever you’re in the house you never see it! They can be disguised within a garden really easily. Our [Ecodan heat pump] can’t be seen from anywhere inside the house, it’s completely hidden and its only 4 and a half metres from the house.”
7. Not Taking a Whole-Home Approach
Heating and ventilation work best together. Combining an Ecodan R290 heat pump with Lossnay MVHR creates a comfortable, healthy home that’s efficient year-round.
✅ Pro Tip: Talk to your installer about integrated controls. Mitsubishi Electric provide smart systems that allow your heating and ventilation to be controlled from your phone.
8. Overestimating Space Requirements
Many homeowners assume they’ll need a dedicated plant room for a heat pump system, which can put people off during the design stage. In reality, the indoor unit is compact — roughly the size of a fridge — and can usually fit neatly into a utility room or similar space.
✅ Pro Tip: When planning a new build or retrofit, speak to your installer early about placement. Clever integration into your home design can save space and make your system more convenient to access.
And finally…
