Meet Deirdre Whelan – Interior Designer and Judge of RTÉ’s Home of The Year
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up?
Nothing as exciting as when my dad was little – he wanted to be the pope! Me – an architect!
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Who is your biggest inspiration?
What are your secret skills?
Not bad at sketching
What was the best gift you’ve ever given to someone?
I brought back a proper milkshake maker from the States for my family after spending the summer over there. It went down a treat with my dad and brother in particular who are like me, big icecream fans!
What would you grab if your house was on fire?
Apart from my family, dog, some clothes wallet and phone… not sure there are so many things I hold dear.
What is your destination for the trip of your dreams?
There are so many places I want to see, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq and more of Japan.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Who would be your ideal dinner guest?
What could you not live without?
If we are talking practical – my bike. I love my bike!
What’s your greatest vice?
Being to practical
Which season do you like the most – spring, summer, autumn or winter?
If you could travel to any place on the earth, where would you go and why?
If I was going to go somewhere to chill out it would be West Cork or Mallorca. For culture, buzz and excitement I love New York or London.
What is it that you are most passionate about?
What is your favorite food?
I like a lot of things but I do like a really good salad and I love middle eastern cooking
When you’re not working, how fo you like to spend your time?
With family or in the gym
If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, whose would they be? Why?
Barbara Streisand would be interesting – I don’t have a note in my head and as a kid I used to love listening to her voice. Be nice to be able to sing in key for one day
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Enjoy life and keep dreaming!
Deirdre Whelan will be speaking to Kirstie McDermott on the House and Home Interiors & Design Theatre on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April 2019.
