Jackie Tyrrell Design for Michael Murphy Home Furnishings
We chatted to Jackie Tyrrell ahead of the show …. from singing the blues on the Orient Express to bopping around her kitchen , this was a fun chat!!
1. What led you to get into your chosen career
I was always very creative and artistic from a very young age. So, it was natural that I would end up working in the creative field somehow.
I think it’s a mixture of always being involved in something creative, from poster design to stage sets as a teenager, learning how to do joinery and carpentry after school years and working in the interior decoration world, led me towards interior design.
Once I knew this was the field I wanted to pursue, then I focused in my formal Education, learning the skills required and studying the great architects and designers opens up your mind to all the possibilities around you and within your career.
I am very lucky, I love my job, I get to use both my artistic and technical skills every day.2. How do you “switch off”
For me the best way to switch off is to bring my dog, Snoop, out onto The Curragh and let the wind blow through me. It grounds you immediately, especially if it has been a stressful day, it reminds you to plug back in to what’s really important.
3. Have you ever met a person who you were in awe of
Yes, lots….I am in awe of people that may be struggling with their lives, through illness, loss or disability and how giving and kind they can be, how they always have a smile even through their pain…I am in awe of that.
4. What inspires you
Other designers! There are some really fantastic Irish interior designers and architects and seeing their work in real life or on social media inspires me.
5. Where is your favourite place you have visited
I am very lucky I have seen lots of the world and have lots more to see. I think I have different snippets from different trips that make it a favourite place, like, singing the blues in the piano bar on the orient express, or climbing to the top of the Skellig’s, with a belly full of fear, eating food at a table with strangers of all different nationalities and becoming friends but in saying all that…..I love Barcelona, I have been five times 😊
6. TV or music
Music…..i love music!!…..I sing and play guitar and my father is a musician, so we were always surrounded by good music. I love jazz, soul, rap, reggae, ska right through to rock, love a bit of Thin Lizzy.
7. What is your guilty pleasure
I have to say I don’t feel guilty about any pleasures, they are well earned. I love nothing more than candles lit, soft music, a steaming hot bath and a glass of red wine……bliss……actually throw in a square or two of chocolate for good measure 😉
8. What could you not live without
My dog, Snoop.
9.What gives you a good old belly laugh
Being silly.…. just good old-fashioned fun…. funnies stories, dirty jokes, dancing with your friends or alone in the kitchen with the radio blaring…, opps that might be an overshare 😊
10.Favourite Movie of all time
Too many favourites for all different reasons, love the Matrix (the first one), Avatar, Zoolander, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Singing in the Rain, Mary Poppins…..ok, I am going to stop now, this is could go on!
11.Most rewarding project you have worked on
I am rewarded on every project, in many different ways, getting into your clients mind and producing a design scheme that they love is very rewarding, words can never really describe the emotion or look you may want in your home or the exact shade of colour your after, so to untangle that for someone is wonderful.
